Steve Smith scored his first century in 18 months on Day 2 at the Gabba against India, notching 101 from 190 balls after arriving at the crease at 2/38.

His brilliant knock was the 33rd century of his career, which now puts him outright second behind only Ricky Ponting (41) as the nation’s top ton-makers.

Smith's efforts alongside Travis Head, who scored a ridiculous 152 from 160 balls, helped Australia reach 7/405 at Stumps as the home side got themselves into a dominant position.

After making just 19 runs from his first three innings of the series, queries were raised about the 35-year-old’s form and age, but Smith himself always kept the faith that a big score was around the corner.

“You’ve always got to believe,” Smith told SEN Cricket.

“I actually feel like I’ve been batting really well the last month or so.

“I’ve had a couple of unlucky dismissals I think and a couple of good balls in between in Perth and I was strangled down the leg-side in Adelaide.

“You’ve got to keep the faith I suppose … it’s been challenging, but I was happy to post a score yesterday and put us in a nice position.”

Day 3 of the third Test at the Gabba is live now as Australia look to get some more quick runs before India’s first attempt with the willow. Listen to every ball on SEN and the SEN app.
