Kane Cornes disagrees with the Western Bulldogs’ call to host their 100th-year celebration game in Round 2 against Collingwood at the MCG.
Cornes’ issue is with the decision to host the clash at a venue that’s not their home ground, with the fixture set to be the Dogs’ first home game at the MCG since 2009.
The Bulldogs play all of their home games normally at Marvel Stadium, while they also hold a poor 2-5 record at the MCG since the start of the 2022 season.
While the choice of venue presents a better financial opportunity and ensures a bigger crowd, Cornes thinks that the Dogs should have prioritised winning over cash and instead hosted the clash at Marvel.
He discussed the decision and how the Dogs shape up at the ‘G compared to under the roof with Sam Edmund on SEN Breakfast.
Edmund: “The Dogs v Pies at the ‘G, it's primetime Friday night in Round 2. That's their 100-year celebration, so the Dogs have chosen Collingwood, as a lot of clubs do, and they’ve chosen the MCG for their 100 years.”
Cornes: “You know what they should have chosen? Marvel. What would you rather, an extra 50,000 in attendance or a win?”
Edmund: “Well, what is known is that you make far more money from a crowd at the MCG than you do at Marvel.”
Cornes: “So, money is more important than a victory?”
Edmund: “Well, money is very, very important.”
Cornes: “More important than a victory given how close the ladder was last year?”
Edmund: “How many goals better are the Dogs at Marvel than the MCG?”
Cornes: “Four goals … I wonder if that final against Hawthorn was played at Marvel, who would have won?”
Edmund: “Well, Hawthorn absolutely demolished them at the ‘G.”
Cornes: “At Marvel it’s a different story. The ‘Dinosaur Dogs’ at Marvel … it’s a totally different story than a wintry day in slippery conditions at the MCG.”
Edmund: “The risk is, of course, is there could end up being 70,000 Collingwood supporters there.”
Cornes: “Well, there will be … they’re probably six goals worse off playing at the MCG.”
