One of the top race days for the year arrives in Hobart on Sunday, with five feature races on the eight-event card.
The weather forecast looks perfect for Sunday, and the rail is +8m after being in +2m for the previous meeting on 3 January.

Race 5 – 2. Alvarinho The winner of this race in 2024, it’s easy to make the case that Alvarinho is a better horse this season having finished third in the state’s best sprint race last start. She was freshened leading into the Ladry Lynette last year, the same recipe trainer Imogen Miller has used this time. Ideally drawn to stalk the speed and she loves racing in Hobart where all five of her career victories have arrived.
Race 1 – The Trine
I gave The Trine a strong chance on debut, but he had little market love, eventually running second at $31. Unfortunately, none of those odds will be on offer this time, but again he’ll take some beating. He booted through to lead from a low draw last time, and although he’s drawn out here, there doesn’t look to be a lot of speed, so I’m anticipating the same tactics. Arguably an easier assignment than last time, with even luck and natural improvement at his second start, The Trine is the one to beat.
Race 7 – 3. Alhambra Lad
The Patrick & Michelle Payne-trained Alhambra Lad returns to the scene of the crime, having won this race with ease last year. His form leading into the race in 2024 was better than it reads this year, but to my eye he’s done enough in his two runs this time in to suggest he’ll improve getting out to a trip where he is a perfect 2/2. Blinkers go on, as does visiting hoop Fred Kersley, who has ridden plenty of winners on the Hobart track. $11 in early markets is much longer than I have him.
