The ratings are in for Monday’s Big Bash Final between the Hurricanes and Thunder and it’s a huge win for cricket down under.

According to TV Tonight, 2,951,000 tuned in to watch Mitch Owen make a ridiculous century that helped chase down the Thunder’s target of 183 with 35 balls to spare.

Those figures delivered Channel Seven the most-watched program of the night. For comparison, the BBL|13 Final between the Heat and Sixers reached an audience of 471,000.

SEN The Run Home duo Andy Maher and Andrew Gaze reacted to this year’s ratings in astonishment as people came from far and wide to watch Owen’s knock once he got rolling in Hobart.

Maher: “Seven's BBL ratings last night are in at 2.95 million.

“That’s a great sort of number, it was number one around the great nation and it’s knocked off MAFS (Married at First Sight) by 400,000, that’s unheard of!”

Gaze: “That is actually unheard of. That is a very special number.

“What I think it does indicate that is that the interest is there, and if you've got a performance where you see a bit of history being made … a sporting performance where people see it, get on the socials and everyone jumps on board.

“From that, then the numbers skyrocket, and that was one of those nights last night.”

Maher: “Who knows … it might be the innings of a lifetime.”
