AFL feuds: Surprise clash that’s been hidden for years

Kane Cornes is never one to shy away from tough conversations and his latest countdown list is mere confirmation of this fact.

Cornes have given his top 10 feuds taking place within the football world but crucially they are not in any particular order.

Cornes also made the distinction not to include any feuds involving himself.

1. Brad Scott vs David King

The former North Melbourne coach has very little time for the two-time premiership player as shown by this clip in his final game as coach for the Kangaroos.

“Hard to beat that one,” Cornes admitted.

“The footage is unbelievable.”

2. Jack Ginnivan vs Ken Hinkley

Sparked by Hinkley giving Ginnivan an aeroplane celebration in last year’s semi-final after Ginnivan posted a comment on a Brodie Grundy Instagram post to the effect of playing Sydney in the Preliminary final before their semi-final.

Hinkley was fined $20,000 over the incident.

The teams faced off against each other on Sunday night with the Power smashing the Hawks by 30 points after leading by 59 at half-time.

3. Damian Barrett vs Luke Beveridge

The Western Bulldogs coach made particular comments about a journalist while not explicitly stating who Beveridge considered to have a black soul.

Although most people suspect it was Barrett being referred to due to their ongoing feud.

“That one has been going for a period of time,” Healy stated.

“And no sign of that one ending,” Cornes added.

4. Caroline Wilson vs Jeff Kennett

“Those two cannot stand each other,” Cornes said.

“We had Jeff in on Footy Classified last year, it was good television.

“But it was awkward and clearly those two don’t have a lot of time for each other.”

5. Tim Watson vs Tony Jones

The two have over the last 30 years faced off nightly with Watson being the sports newsreader for Channel 7 while Jones read the sports news for Channel 9.

Gerard Healy sounded surprised when Cornes mentioned that these two had a feud.

“Really, is that a feud?” Healy asked.

“That is a feud, don’t worry about that,” Cornes confirmed.

“They're pretty good at hiding it but if you have listened to both of them carefully over the years, I don’t think there is a lot of love lost there.”

6. Garry Lyon vs Mark Robinson

Cornes based this off Lyon’s comment about an article Robinson had written calling it “embarrassing” and “a so-called senior journalist”.

“Pretty strong,” Cornes mentioned.

“I’d forgotten about that,” Healy added.

7. Damian Barrett vs Mark Robinson

The two veteran journalists used to work together at the Herald Sun as football writers with the feud believed to have stemmed from there.

“They cannot stand each other and haven’t for a long time to the point where they hardly mention each other’s names,” Cornes said.

8. Dayne Zorko vs Touk Miller

The two have been rivals for at least the last five years with both having been captains of their respective clubs.

“It’s a good feud; we don’t have many (on-field),” Cornes said.

9. Ken Hinkley vs David King

“Definitely a feud there,” Cornes said.

10. Riley Thilthorpe vs Mac Andrew

This was mainly based on last week’s match between the two sides where they were a direct match-up on one another.

“It’s not quite top of the table yet but we’ll see how this one develops,” Cornes wondered.

“Will that be one to watch? Because that will be around for the next ten years, they have played a lot of footy on each other directly.”
