Giants’ injury curse continues after win over Pies

GWS’ injury curse has increased despite Friday’s solid 110-75 practice match victory against Collingwood.

The Giants held the Pies at arm’s length all day, with both sides enjoying a run at Bundoora as many stars from either side sat out or were sidelined with injury.

Unfortunately for GWS, Brent Daniels (hamstring) and Cody Angove (hamstring) both exited the game in the second quarter.

While we’re yet unsure on the severity of the injury concerns, any new names on the injury list will hurt GWS who have already lost Tom Green (ACL), Finn Callaghan (hip flexor), Toby Bedford (hamstring) and Sam Taylor (hamstring) in recent weeks.

In positive news, the Giants would be happy with some positive signs they saw on Friday with Clayton Oliver enjoying a strong game in the midfield. They’ll need their new recruit with Green now sidelined for the season.

Up forward, Nick Madden impressed, while Kieren Briggs (who finished with ice on his calf) and Jake Stringer, were sharp.

For the Magpies, they appear to have gotten away from Bundoora with a clean bill of health.

With a raft of big names out, Ed Allan showed some really impressive signs on the ball. Mature-aged draftee Angus Anderson also showed signs that he could be ready for senior football already.

In next week’s AAMI Community Series fixtures, GWS face Sydney at Henson Park on Thursday, while Collingwood face North Melbourne at Mars Stadium on Sunday.
