Essendon hosted Richmond in a hit out stacked with the talents of tomorrow.

The two sides put on an impressive contest in front of a packed out Hangar, with the hosts running out victorious by 50 points (18.10.118 to 10.8.68) after coming from behind in the early stages.

Without the likes of Zach Merrett, Jordan Ridley, Nathan Broad, Nick Vlastuin and Dion Prestia, the two clubs competed with a plethora of fresh faces leading the line on either side.

Here are the key talking points we took from the Bombers' win!

Sam Lalor might be Dustin Martin

The number four must have magic powers...

Sam Lalor took to the field in Dusty's old kit for the first time, and it's almost impossible to tell him apart from his legendary predecessor.

From his impressive size to his physical presence, his ability with and without the ball and his mid/forward role, the Tigers may have genuinely patched their Dustin Martin shaped hole with... Dustin Martin.

Excelling in just a half of football, look out for Lalor in 2026.

Injured Bombers back to full health

Essendon fielded a pair of top talents returning from injury, with hopes of a healthy season of guiding the club up the table.

Both Darcy Parish and Zach Reid successfully navigated their return contests, making strong contributions across the course of the day.

Ruckman Nick Bryan also participated in pre-game running and doesn't look too far away.

Young guns on display

Both sides fielded a selection of fine talents, many of which appear ready to excel at the top level.

For the home side, Dyson Sharp spent much of the day on and around the ball, flaunting a high level of composure with ball in hand. A certainty for an early debut.

Max Kondogiannis was strong in the defensive half and Jacob Farrow showed flashes of brilliance, while Hussein El Akhchar also had his moments.

For the Tigers, key forward duo of Harry Armstrong and Jonty Faull worked well in a tandem, remaining dangerous throughout.

Sam Cumming and Sam Grlj both put on top performances in their first hit out, while Patrick Retschko showed plenty in his second half runout.

Much to look forward to for both sides.

Borderline stars

Today's contest housed a handful of players that could elevate to stardom over the course of this season.

Nate Caddy's performance was well beyond the standard, looking incredibly sharp ahead of what could be an explosion in 2026.

Archie Roberts and Sam Durham were dominant through the midfield alongside Jye Caldwell and Dyson Sharp, shaping a formidable engine room for years to come.

Of course, Sam Lalor's breakout is imminent - a clear standout for the Tigers.

These talents weren't just the better performers today - they could prove some of the best in the comp.

Who to expect more of

Both lists have seen significant turnover over the last few seasons - who is expected to play frequent footy this year?

For the Bombers, lockdown defender Jayden Nguyen looked in good nick and is primed to hold his spot in the 23.

Lachie Blakiston looks to be the club's first choice ruckman in Nick Bryan's absence and Saad El-Hawli performed well - expect these two to feature heavily this season.

Tigs fans, Kane McAuliffe was prominant, as was Steely Green.

Josh Gibcus was strong after missing plenty of football, while Campbell Gray and Jasper Alger are certain to cause selection headaches.
