Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister James Marape has thrown his support behind the PNG Chiefs' push to sign Jarome Luai.

With their impending entry into the NRL in 2028, the PNG Chiefs are pulling out all the stops to secure the Wests Tigers captain following his visit to the country on Sunday.

During that visit, he reportedly met with club CEO Lorna McPherson and GM of Football and former Nine Journalist Michael Chammas.

With Luai having an option in his five-year contract this Thursday (April 30) which would allow him to sign a deal with the Chiefs for 2028, the images have sent the Rugby League world into overdrive with speculation.

Speaking on the matter, Marapae was incredibly thrilled for the 29-year-old to consider signing here.

“To have a player of Jarome Luai’s calibre visit our country, experience our culture, meet our people, and see what Papua New Guinea has to offer is heartwarming for our nation,” he said.

“On behalf of the people and government of Papua New Guinea, I welcome him and his family to our country.

“At this stage, there is nothing formal or concrete. Jarome remains contracted to the Wests Tigers, and we fully respect his current obligations.

“We are a nation that honours due process, and we respect clubs, contracts, and the professionalism of the game.

“To be the first high-profile player to come and show interest in our team is something we deeply appreciate.

“It sends a message that Papua New Guinea is ready, rugby league is strong here, and our future in the NRL is bright.”

This season, Luai has helped the Tigers to a 5-2 record which sees them sit 3rd on the ladder.

In the four games he has played, the former Panther has managed nine tackle breaks, six try assists, six line break assists and a try.

The Chiefs officially join the NRL in 2028.
