The cricket world is in mourning following the announcement that West Indies cricketing great Sir Garfield Sobers has passed away, aged 89.

In an international career that spanned two decades, the all-rounder established himself as one of the all-time greats in the sport's history.

In his 93 Tests for the West Indies, Sobers scored 8032 runs at an average of 57.78, including 26 centuries, including his 365 not out against Pakistan, the highest individual Test score for 36 years, whilst taking 235 wickets at an average of 34.03.

As a result, he would be voted as one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the 20th Century as well as being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2009.

In his first series as captain in 1964/65, he led the West Indies to their first-ever Test series victory against Australia.

He also went on to represent South Australia in the Sheffield Shield between 1961 and 1964, where he helped the state side lift the shield in 1963/64.

Sobers was knighted in 1975 for his services to cricket. He also received an Order of Australia (AO) medal in 2003.
