"Rank cheating": Whateley slams Broncos announcer

Gerard Whateley and Andrew Voss have panned the Brisbane Broncos over the poor gamesmanship of their ground announcer during the club’s loss to the Melbourne Storm.

In their final home match for the reigning premiers, Broncos ground announcer and former captain Alex Glenn was heard on several occasions trying to put off Storm players whilst trying to catch a high ball by using chants across Suncorp Stadium's public address system.

This prompted the Victorian club to complain to the NRL during the match. But despite being told that it had been fixed, it continued to happen.

Whilst the actions of Glenn had no real effect on the game result with the Storm running away 46-20 victors on Thursday night, the respected Rugby League commentator was disappointed by the lack of professionalism shown by Brisbane.

“I call it childish,” Voss said on SEN’s Whateley.

“I call it amateurish. It's past a bit of fun.”

Whateley would go one step further, calling the actions by the Broncos ‘cheating’ and a deliberate ploy to seek an advantage through poor gamesmanship.

“Rank cheating is what it is,” he said.

“It's not gamesmanship, and it's not playful.

“The equivalency we were offered is imagine Australia and England playing, and there's a ball hit high into the outfield and while the English fielder is under it, we start to jump on the ground announcement, (going) you should drop the catch, you mug.

“That is no good, and that is not an accident.”

The Broncos conclude their season on Thursday night against the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium.
