Signings watch: Could Young be PNG's best signing yet?

With Hudson Young weighing up the choice of leaving the Canberra Raiders for the PNG Chiefs, Bryan Fletcher believes he would become the club's best signing to date.

Across the last few weeks, the NSW representative has been connected to a move with the NRL’s 19th side.

In fact, the Raiders prop is reportedly set to visit the country this month, signalling his interest in a potential move to the expansion side.

To try and keep him at the club, Canberra has reportedly offered him a three-year deal which will see him earn $1.1 million per season, with the former Rooster and Rabbitoh noting that the Green Machine must do everything to keep him.

“Just looking at the record, every player that has gone there and visited, they've signed,” Fletcher said on SEN’s The Run Home with Joel and Fletch.

“The Raiders can't afford to lose him.”

That sentiment was shared by SEN’s Sportday co-host and Canberra Raiders legend Jarrod Croker.

“Well, he's our most influential player, I believe,” Croker explained.

“Simi Sasagi is probably the other one, but in regards to the future going forward and what the club is like and how they play the game, and the brand that Huddo plays in attack, defence, off the field, on the field, he's probably the next captain after Joe Tapine.”

And should Young follow the likes of Jarome Luai, Connor Watson and Zac Lomax to sign after touring the country, Fletcher thinks the 28-year-old could be their most important addition with the possibility of securing their inaugural captain.

“If he goes to PNG, I'm going to say that is the best signing out of all the seven they've got; he'll be number eight,” he added.

“I was thinking to myself, who are they gonna get captain?

“Is it gonna be Jarome, but I'd have Hudson.”

The Chiefs enter the NRL in 2028.
