Carlton GM delivers catergorical stance on trading star defender

Carlton's GM of Football Chris Davies has given an update on what the club plans to do during the trade and free agency period.

With their season ending on Friday night following their 33-point loss against Geelong, the Blues now move their focus to what their list looks like in 2027.

Despite not having a list manager, Carlton are set to be busy during the next couple of weeks.

One of the main players that has been discussed as potentially being traded out has been key defender Jacob Weitering.

The former No.1 pick and vice-captain of the club, who comes out of contract until 2031, has received interest from North Melbourne, with SEN’s David King believing the club should investigate what they could get.

But the former Port Adelaide Head of Football has poured cold water over that prospect.         

“We're not trading Jacob Weitering,” Davies said on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“I can be as categoric as I need to be here.

“I know that that has been a narrative for many through the period of time.

“It hasn't been the narrative from anyone inside the club.”

Outside of the discussion surrounding Weitering, most of the discussion around Carlton’s list chances has been about whom they could bring in.

The Blues will be hopeful they can draft father-son pick and highly rated prospect Cody Walker to their list.

Alongside the draft, Davies confirmed the club will be trying their hardest to improve their list through free agency should the right player come up, having been connected to Bulldogs defender Buku Khamis and Swans forward Joel Amartey.

“We're gonna be having a crack through the free agency period,” he added.

“I think it's probably more important for us to attack the draft.

“At the same time, we'll look at any way through the next period of time to try and improve our list.

“We still feel like we've got some things that we need to work on from a list perspective.

“I think that came out last night, (and) we've definitely got some work to do.

“I don't think anyone certainly myself, Graham Wright as the CEO or Josh as the coach (is) overestimating where our list is at.

“We still feel like we've got a lot of work to do, and we'll get down to that over the next period of time.”

The Blues currently have Pick 11 alongside Sydney’s first-round pick, which will be affected by where they finish in this final series.
