“Smashings”: Cornes and King’s Semi Final predictions

Kane Cornes reckons there will be a pair of one-sided results in this weekend’s Semi Finals.

Discussing the Fremantle v Geelong and Brisbane v Adelaide matches with Fireball co-host David King, Cornes feels some big wins are in the air.

He has minor premiers the Dockers bouncing back hard against the Cats after a shock home loss to Hawthorn, while suggesting back-to-back premiers the Lions will easily beat the Crows after their loss to Sydney last weekend.

Cornes believes Freo will win by 40 or more points and the Lions will by 60 points or more.

King: “I’m excited about Geelong's chances tonight.”

Cornes: “I think we're going to get two of the great smashings.”

King: “Oh wow. Which way? Do you think Fremantle will smash Geelong?”

Cornes: “Both teams that lost will bounce back in a big way. Mark that down.”

King: “What's considered a smashing?”

Cones: “Fremantle 40-plus, Brisbane 60-plus.”

King: “60-plus? Well, don't bother watching everyone. Or watch early, one or the other.”

Cones: “Do you disagree?”

King: “I do disagree.”

Cornes: “Who is the best option to cause an upset, Geelong?”

King: “Geelong, definitely.”

Cornes: “Straight sets for your boys? You've had them at 60% in the premiership pie all year, and now you're telling me they're gone in straight sets.”

King: “I love the Fremantle Dockers. Can I just put that on the table right here? They are my boys.”

Cornes: “He’s set them up to fail all year.”

King: “I think they're right in it. I don't think it'll be a smashing.

“I think the Geelong Footy Club are playing better football than what we give them credit for.”

King delved deeper into the Cats and all the chatter surrounding Jeremy Cameron who has been well below his best in recent times.

He had a prediction regarding Cameron’s game.

“A lot of talk about Cameron and all those sorts of things. There are match winners everywhere for Geelong. Tom Stewart's just the biggest headache in the game,” he said.

“I think he’ll sneak forward, he’ll match up against a wingman, and you'll hit the scoreboard. He’ll kick two goals as a wingman.

“Ollie Dempsey will be on the other wing kicking two goals. Name me another team that gets three or four goals from wingmen.

“I think they'll get four goals out of their wingman.

“So I think they'll be fine.”

He also had plenty of questions for the Dockers.

“There's a bit of apprehension, there's a bit of nervousness in Western Australia right now,” he added.

“Fremantle were expected to win last week. They couldn't have played poorer than what they did and right now they're probably thinking, ‘Ok, are we too tall forward of the ball? Does Mason Cox still have a role for us? Have we got the right second ruckman? We’ve got no other choice. Should we be using Patrick Voss in the ruck as a second ruckman? Have we got enough running half-back defenders?

“Because it all looks good during the home and away season when things are rolling and going well, but you get whacked between the the eyes in a final and all of a sudden your confidence is gone.

“I don't think it'll be a smashing, I think the Cats will be right in it.

“If it gets down a battle of the coaches box, Chris Scott is the best at adjusting in-game in the competition.”
