Bell: Three players Freo should look at

If Fremantle wants to continue contending for the coming years, they must target an area of need.

That is according to former Dockers footy boss Peter Bell who has identified a trio of players the club should be attempting to recruit.

Bell prefaced this by saying he is unsure of any of the trio would even be interested in the Dockers.

“With Freo and where they are this year, and hopefully finishing up the top the next few years, late first-rounders is not what will propel them to where they want to get to,” Bell said on SEN WA Breakfast.

“So bundle up your picks and go after the player that you want. They don’t need more depth, they don’t need more picks or players to develop.

“They either need a trade or they need someone in the pointy end of the draft who will play straight away.”

It comes after Freo was linked with retired Richmond defender Nathan Broad.

While Bell doesn’t necessarily feel Broad is the right fit for the Dockers, he did throw up three players that Freo should be looking at including Geelong’s Lawson Humphries.

“The player or players that I think Fremantle should be right after - they should be throwing everything at Lawson Humphries.

“Because he defends and is a good ball user. He could be very, very, very happy at Geelong and just shut it down in one second. I’m just saying that’s the player they should be throwing everything at.”

Western Australian product Humphries is contracted with the Cats until the end of 2028.

Another WA talent the Dockers should’ve their eye on is emerging Giant Joe Fonti who has a contract until the end of 2027.

“I think Fremantle should also be monitoring Joe Fonti really closely. The GWS half-backs are super offensive, and Fremantle like theirs to defend a bit more.

“But he could adapt, he’s talented enough to do that.”

And then there is St Kilda’s Alix Tauru who has been linked with a potential exit this trade period.

“The other one - and he’d have no reason to come to Western Australia - is Alix Tauru. I think he’s going to be a star.

“At some stage Alex Pearce will come towards the end, and I think that he (Tauru) would be a really good addition to any team, but particularly Fremantle.

“He could really help with their ball movement as well as the intercept game.

“He’s a kid form Gippsland who has been linked to Tasmania and a few other clubs. Things don’t look from the outside to be that happy at St Kilda.

“There’s just three names. I have no insights into whether any of them would be interested.”
