"Humbling day": Rams coach reflects on season opening loss

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay has admitted that he has been humbled by the franchise’s disappointing season opener loss against the San Francisco 49ers.

Having come into the season as the Super Bowl favourites following the acquisitions of Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie alongside their league-leading offence, the Rams came into the clash as favourites.

But their decision to come to Australia on Thursday morning compared to the 49ers who landed in Melbourne last Friday, backfired with San Francisco running away with the match in the second half to win 27-7.

Speaking on the result, the Super Bowl LVI-winning coach admitted the Niners were simply too good for his side.      “They outplayed us in every facet,” McVay explained post-game.

“I didn't do nearly a good enough job. This is a humbling day for us, and this will define us only if we allow it to, and today was one of those days.

“I always look inside out. I didn't do a good enough job getting us ready to go. There were some opportunities where maybe the game could have flipped, but they deserved the win.

“We're ready to go and we'll look at it, we'll see where we can improve and be better moving forward.

“But this is a good humbling day. This is where what can sometimes happen in sports.”

But despite the loss, the 40-year-old is keeping a positive mindset as they look to put the result behind them for what will be a long season ahead.

“I love this locker room. The first thing that I'm gonna look at is myself and I have to do a better job for our group collectively with our coaches, with our players and we'll look at this film and we'll get back to work because clearly,” he continued.

“That's obviously what we've got to do and sometimes sports can humble you and today was one of those days. I make no excuses and you know whether you want to say it's about travel or whatever, we just weren't good enough in that window.

“I didn't coach good enough and we'll look at it and we'll move forward and that's where we're at right now, but it was a great atmosphere.”

The Rams will look to respond from their Week 1 loss next week when they host the New York Giants at SoFi Stadium.

That takes place on September 22 (AEST) with kick-off at 10:15am.
