Trade Bell: Giants forward attracting Essendon interest

Jake Riccardi

“One of the players that was waiting on (Toby Greene’s) decision was Jake Riccardi.

“The Giants had pulled back their offer for him, waiting on Greene to see what he was going to do.

“Now that he has made his decision they have circled back with a three-year deal, but he has looked elsewhere in the meantime.

“There is no guarantee that he is going to sign that three-year deal. He might want more money in Victoria – and I think there would be more money in Victoria.

“There are a couple of clubs in Melbourne looking at him, including Essendon.”

Lachie Whitfield

“He spoke at the Peninsula Grammar Brownlow Breakfast (on Friday).

“The Giants would trade him for a first rounder. They would do this deal; he only has one year remaining on his contract.

“St Kilda is clearly interested – they’ve got Gubby Allan, that connection there because he was at the Giants.

“I’m not sure Whitfield is keen on the Saints, but it is well known that he and his family will come back to Victoria after he retires.

“They could bring that forward, and there’s a chance that that could happen in this year’s trade period.

“He grew up with Nic Newman; Carlton is looking for a half back as Chris Davies told us.

“He said at the breakfast yesterday that he is more open to it now than when he found out about it on the golf course that the Giants were putting his name forward.”

Joel Amartey

“Decision time for him. It’s go time.

“He wanted to stay all year but the financial difference between what the Swans are offering and what Carlton are offering is significant – Sam Edmund has reported around $1 million, so $200,000 a year.

“The Swans would have liked to keep him, but they are prepared to lose him as well, because they will get Band 1 compensation for him and he wasn’t in the team for this final.

“It is just Carlton or the Sydney Swans.”

Alix Tauru

“Alix Tauru toured the Gold Coast Suns this time last week.

“The Suns aren’t interested anymore. They explored it, the Saints have now offered four years.

“It’s been unsettled, it’s fair to say.

“His management is the same as Leek Aleer’s management, and I know Aleer’s management aren’t too happy with the Saints after last year.

“It’s going to take a lot to get (Tauru) out this year. He is out of contract at the end of next year, so I think Tassie will come hard for him if he hasn’t resigned before then.”

Jayden Short

“Collingwood is the link there.

“He is weighing up whether he wants to move clubs. He is weighing up, at 30, if it’s in his best interest to get to Collingwood, but they are certainly interested.

“They’ve got that connection through Justin Leppitsch and Craig McRae, who were at Richmond in the past.

“They would like Jayden Short, but he is contracted to the Tigers. They would have to do that deal.”

Jordon Butts

“Jordon Butts is still keen on the Western Bulldogs, and the Western Bulldogs are still keen on him. It didn’t happen in the last few days.

“He is a free agent, the Dogs are offering $700-750 thousand by five, Adelaide is offering a little bit less by four.

“This will play out over the next few days. I still think this gets done.

“There’s been a few rumours that because of the money they are spending on Zak Butters, they’re not ready to spend it on Butts.

“Ethically, no issue with the Dogs. They’ve presented the deal to Jordon Butts, and that deal remains on the table.

“He has to make a call in the next few days, but I still think that’s more likely.”

Rory Lobb

“Colin Young, his manager, was on his own podcast over the last 24 hours.

“He said it’s rubbish. St Kilda hasn’t offered a deal, one, two or three years.

“That’s from the manager’s mouth himself. You can take that whatever way you want.

“He is 34, Rory Lobb, so a three-year deal would be remarkable. If Todd Marshall comes in, logic says that Lobb looks elsewhere.

“The pattern of Lobb’s career is that he never gets out of contract anywhere – he always ends up moving before he runs out of contract.”

Flynn Riley

“Carlton has offered two years; Collingwood has presented a deal that is longer than that. He is that sort of depth that the Pies are looking for.”

Christian Salem

“He is more likely to sign a one-year deal at Melbourne. I’m not sure there’s a hell of a lot of interest for him.”

Jordan Ridley

“Has interest from Geelong as well. It was Brisbane, but it’s not anymore, it’s Geelong and North Melbourne.

“He is contracted- his manager, Nick Gieschen, looks after Ridley and also Zach Merrett, so he’s got a bit on his plate at the Bombers.”

Trent Rivers

“Everyone is waiting on Trent Rivers and whether he is keen to get to West Coast or not.

“He is contracted player, so the Dees are happy to hold onto him, but I’m sure if a good deal is offered, they would look at it as well.”
