Cans thrown in disgraceful act as Warriors bow out in straight sets

With a record-breaking crowd at Eden Park, Warriors fans have turned their frustrations towards the referees, throwing beer cans towards them.

The disgraceful act comes after the Wahs saw their season come to an end in straight sets on Sunday night after suffering a 12-10 loss against the Newcastle Knights.

Some of that frustration towards them comes from the last 10 minutes of their clash following some controversial calls going against the side.

At the 74th minute, Knights winger Greg Marzhew appeared to lose the ball from a loose carry after a hit-up with Te Maire Martin and Mitch Barnett. But it was deemed to be a ball strip, with the captain's challenge being unsuccessful in overturning the decision.

Then in their final set for the game with less than a minute on the clock, centre Leka Halasima attempted to catch Te Maire Martin's high bomb but was blocked by Tyson Frizell, who appeared to come off his line to prevent Halasima's attempt.

But no penalty was awarded, which was enough for Newcastle to hold on to victory.

On SEN League, Justin Horo and Brett Kimmorley were quick to express their dissatisfaction towards the fans that participated in that act.

Horo: "You can't do that to the referees."

Kimmorley: "I agree, totally agree, and hopefully there's some sanctions come if there's clear footage of who these people are for (the) protection of the referees'."

It comes a day after Hawthorn fans also threw beer cans towards umpires coming off the field following the Hawks' nine-point loss to Brisbane in a preliminary final.

The Knights will now face the Penrith Panthers at Accor Stadium for a spot in the Grand Final next Sunday.
