Lynch: Modern Lions will give original three-peat “windburn”

The Brisbane Lions have made history once more, completing an almighty three-peat after an all-time comeback against the Fremantle Dockers on Saturday.

However, the club isn’t expected to fall away any time soon.

Four Grand Finals and three premierships in four years, Chris Fagan’s men have dominated the 2020s behind a number of superstars.

From the departing Lachie Neale to the 37-year-old Dayne Zorko, Brisbane won’t be able to keep their current list around for much longer.

But they still boast a list stacked with elite youth – some of which are anchoring their current charge.

With that in mind, their third might not be their last of the decade.

SEN Tassie co-host Alastair Lynch knows a fair bit about dynasties, starring in Brisbane’s threepeat across ’01, ’02 and ’03 under the legendary Leigh Matthews.

And while he still backs his Michael Voss led side as the best of the generation, Lynch expects this Lions mob to blow their record out of the water.

“I’d argue that (they aren’t a better team),” Lynch told SEN Tassie.

“But, this group, this squad, is going to give my era windburn.

“They are just going to fly past us. Their salary cap is going to have to burst for them not to come off the crest of this wave.

“They are going to be around the mark for the next five years, unless they actually do something silly. I’m exceedingly confident.

“Our team was a very, very good team. But this squad is going to give us windburn. They’ve played in four Grand Finals now; they’ve won three premierships.

“But what they are doing is incredible, and it’s going to keep going. We stopped. We hit a brick wall after our fourth. They are still on the crest of this wave.”

Kane Cornes echoed Lynch’s sentiment, listing some of the names that will carry Brisbane into the coming years.

“They are not going anywhere,” Cornes told SEN Fireball.

“This is the thing – regardless of the decision that Chris Fagan makes, let’s go through how this group is in its absolute prime.

“Will Ashcroft hasn’t even reached his prime yet. There’s two Ashcroft’s, so Levi will get better. There’s Darcy Wilmot who is low 20’s and has now played in 19 finals in four seasons – spare me!

“Zac Bailey has eight years left on his contract in his prime. Cam Rayner is in his prime. Hugh McCluggage is in his absolute prime.

“We’ve got Logan Morris who is 21, Charlie Cameron who has a lot of footy left in him.

“Still got Oscar Allen – you’ll get the better of him if he is fit, he has a long-term contract still.

“Kai Lohmann is in his early 20’s… this group is going nowhere. They are hard to win, and Brisbane will tell you that with their Preliminary Final and Grand Final.

“But this group is going nowhere.”
