Crow requests trade to arch nemesis

Trade Radio and AFL.com.au journalist Cal Twomey has revealed that Adelaide's Luke Pedlar has requested a trade to Port Adelaide.

The out-of-contract forward has turned down interest from Victoria, instead hopeful to remain in South Australia by joining a small percentage of players to play for both SA clubs.

Selected with the 11th overall pick in 2020, Pedlar has managed just 49 games, struggling for game time amid a range of injury battles before falling out of favour under coach Matthew Nicks.

The club in a “very strong position” to land star Giant

Lachie Whitfield could be on his way out at GWS this trade period and there are a few clubs who are showing interest.

The 32-year-old two-time All-Australian has emerged on the radar of Melbourne, St Kilda and Carlton, among others.

But it is the Blues at this stage who are leasing the race, according to AFL Media’s Cal Twomey.

“If I had to name a favourite at the moment - no I won’t do that because I’ll be quoted - I think they’re in a very strong position should they head that way,” Twomey said on AFL Trade Radio’s Gettable.

“But the picks they’ll have to use to get the deal done - there’s still a little bit to work though there.”

Whitfield is contracted with the Giants until the end of 2027.

Eagles absolutely in the mix for Viney

Melbourne veteran Jack Viney is believed to be considering a move to West Coast.

The Demons midfielder, who has been told to explore his options, is attracting interest from both Essendon and the Eagles.

“Viney met with West Coast and Essendon last week having been told by the Demons he can explore his options with two years left on his contract,” Twomey said.

“My understanding is West Coast really impressed in that meeting, and has given him something really strongly to think about.

“It was an impressive pitch, an impressive way to go about it. Andrew McQualter with his links to Viney through Melbourne, and also former assistant coach at Melbourne, Sam Radford, who’s running the midfield at West Coast.

“That I think went really well and they’re absolutely in the mix now for Jack Viney’s considerations as he weighs up his future.”

What is going on with Alix Tauru?

Alix Tauru wanted to leave St Kilda, he met with both Tasmania and the Gold Coast Suns, but now he wants to stay at Moorabbin.

So, what’s going on?

As it stands, the 19-year-old is eager to remain a Saint. But could things change still?

“Alix Tauru wants to stay at St Kilda,” Cal Twomey said on AFL Trade Radio’s Gettable.

“This has been a topsy-turvy fortnight for everybody involved. It’s gone from sussing out options, meeting with Tasmania, meeting with Gold Coast, touring the Gold Coast facility, meeting with Damien Hardwick, getting offered a four-year deal by the Saints.

“The Saints then telling clubs they’re open to trade offers for him. Now it’s come back to Alix Tauru wants to see this through, he wants to see it out at St Kilda and dig his heels in.

“Does that have another twist in the tale? At this point, probably not.

“This is since then (the Saints told clubs they’re willing to trade) that Alix Tauru has made it clear he wants to stay.

“It’s hard to know exactly where this story totally ends.”

Liam Pickering wonders if Tauru’s management group, Centimeter Perfect, has something to do with the curious case.

“If what Cal said is right then it sounds to me like they’re playing games. They’re trying to get as much money out of the Saints as possible,” Pickering said on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Feed.

“But he hasn’t done enough to warrant really big money yet. He has got a different management crew looking after him. It’s not a traditional AFL player management team.

“They’re really being driven by an NRL style of management team, and that is just not the way it’s normally done in the AFL. It’s a different way to go, that’s the reality.”

Pickering added: “When it comes to talking about all the stuff around what’s going on… he’s got a year to go (on his contract) on the draftee money.

“So if he wants to go from that to Nick Daicos money, he won’t be doing that with St Kilda. I don’t think anyone else was going to pay him that either.”

Butters to Bulldogs will happen... but how?

AFL Media’s Cal Twomey unpacked where the Zak Butters to the Western Bulldogs move is at right now.

He remains supremely confident that Butters will get his move to the Dogs from Port Adelaide, but the exact nature of it is still to be determined.

“At the moment it’s at a little bit of a standstill,” Twomey said on AFL Trade Radio’s Gettable.

“But there has been discussions from the Power’s end with multiple clubs.

“This is my tip with how the Butters thing plays out - I think we see a free agency move because I think that pick (Pick 5) is so valuable now to what they want to do this year and also the next couple in terms of the three-year draft plan and strategy with getting enough points to cover Dougie Cochrane (this year), and Louis Salopek and Zemes Pilot next year.

“Then I feel there is a sense that this could be the mega deal of the trade period. But it would just be subsidiary to the Zak Butters free agency move.

“All of these things work in tandem. There have been discussions between a number of clubs about pick slides, about players being involved from different clubs, multiple players, multiple picks where everyone’s ambitions can be met.

“Todd Marshall could still be part of this as well. But the challenge here is that the Bulldogs haven’t wanted to pay the full tote odds for Tod Marshall’s remaining three years of his deal.

“So he is a bit-part player in this but also a reasonable player in terms of the machinations of how this all could play out.

“Butters and his move to the Bulldogs will happen. It’s just about how and by which means he gets there because the free agency period starts on Friday and that goes for a week.

“So the Western Bulldogs, at the latest, can lodge his paperwork as a free agent on Tuesday or Wednesday next week which gives the Power three days to match that for the Friday deadline.

“They’ll have time to do that, but also there is a time pressure on that because if you’re going that way through it and separate Butters from a trade then the actual trade would have to be well and truly on the go by then.”

Freo ruck gettable?

SEN’s Tom Morris says that Sean Darcy’s future at Fremantle is a talking point.

The 28-year-old is contracted with the Dockers until the end of 2030 but has not played at senior level since Round 17.

Morris says Darcy, who was overlooked for Mason Cox during Freo’s finals series, is wanted by some clubs in Melbourne including Richmond.

“The future of Sean Darcy at Fremantle (is in the air). Fremantle will say he’s going nowhere,” Morris said on SEN’s Fireball.

“Sean Darcy might say I’m happy here. He’s contracted at the Dockers for a long period of time but clubs in Melbourne believe they can make a play for him.

“I’m looking at Richmond, I’m looking at any other club that needs a ruck as well. Then it’s what Freo can get back in return.”

Darcy signed a monster six-year extension in 2023 which has him tied to the Dockers for another four seasons.
