“Miles off it”: Stars fail to fire as Heat dominate BBL season-opener

The Melbourne Stars failed to start their BBL|13 campaign in any kind of solid fashion after being thrashed by the Brisbane Heat in Thursday’s season-opener at the Gabba.

Batting first, the Heat plundered 3/214 with Colin Munro dominating at the top with 99 not out. In response, the Stars could only muster 111 as they were bowled out in 15.1 overs.

To rub salt into the would, captain Glenn Maxwell looked in pain throughout his innings of 23 from 14 balls with an elbow complaint, and he is the last person the men in green can afford to miss early in the season.

Bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile also appeared to suffer a calf injury in his final over.

After blowing their chance to jump out of the blocks, SEN’s Sam Edmund is worried that their campaign could go down the same path as their previous three where they’ve missed finals.

He discussed their performance with former Australia all-rounder Simon O’Donnell on SEN Breakfast.

Edmund: “The Brisbane Heat scored 3/214, the Melbourne Stars made just 111, they were dismissed 15.1 overs in.

“They never looked like it.”

O’Donnell: “But that can happen in a chase.

“They never got going.”

O’Donnell: “You can lose your way in a chase because you're chasing so many.

“I mean, they're needing over 10 and over from the start.”

Edmund: “It just has that familiar whiff about it, and a bad whiff about it too if I’m being honest.

“I hope I’m wrong, but they missed the finals last year for a third straight season and if last night's any guide, it'll be four straight (finals misses).

“They won three games last year. I tell you, they are miles off it at the moment.”

The Stars will hope to bounce back when they return home for their second game of the season against the Perth Scorchers at the MCG on Wednesday.
