Blake Johnston from The Leg Up has identified a runner at massive odds in The Meteorite at Cranbourne on Saturday.

The horse is Deepour who races second-up for new trainer Nick Ryan after changing hands from Queensland trainer Adam Campton in recent months.

The seven-year-old gelding ran well in the Listed Century Stakes at Flemington on Oaks Day, finishing a modest eighth but only 2.3 lengths off smart winner Way To The Stars.

Johnston feels he can run a big race under Rhys McLeod from barrier 2.

“What about his first-up run at Flemington behind Way To The Stars over 1000m,” he said on SENTrack’s The Leg Up show.

“He was tailed off early but his late work through the line, he actually clocked the best last 200m of the meeting and past the post he was right there with the trifecta (Way To The Stars, Spacewalk and Recommendation).

“I think getting out to 1200m, he can strip fitter for that effort, there was one figure back early days when he won at Ipswich and bolted in (in June 2023).

“He has the ability to win a race like this and ‘Campo’ always said he was going to be a nice horse and he was going to win black type races.

“We haven’t seen the best of him for a little while. He went to a Ramornie (at Grafton in July 2023) and started favourite in a race like that, so that sort of form measures up to a race like this.

“Steps to 1200m, good draw, settles closer. I think he can run a race.”

Deeper is currently rated at $46 with Sportsbet for new slot race initiative on Cranbourne Cup Day.
