Which racing headlines would you like to see in 2025?
SENTrack’s Cam Luke and Mick Gannon answered that exact question expertly by putting forward some very strong hypothetical headlines.
Luke would love to see a dead heat in Australia’s premier weight-for-age race the Cox Plate.
“Dead heat in the Ladbrokes Cox Plate,” Luke said on SENTrack.
“I would love it. We’re going to lose Moonee Valley in its current form, it will change a little bit. I’m sure I’ll love it as much as the current one.
“Just imagine that. I think we’ve got a plethora of horses that can be right there - Ceolwulf, Broadsiding, Autumn Glow, Via Sistina if they have another crack, there’ll be a three-year-old that bobs up out of nowhere.
“It’s a great race. I thought there’d be a chance of a photo finish this year.
“I guess it’s a bit tongue-in-cheek but that is one off the top of my head. We’d go nuts at Moonee Valley on SENTrack that day if it happened.”
We almost saw a dead heat in the Cox Plate in 2021 when State Of Rest edged out Anamoe after a very lengthy protest.
Two years later and the judge was required again when Romantic Warrior and Mr Brightside hit the line together, only for the Hong Kong galloper to be given the nod.
Gannon is looking a little bit further away with his potential headline
“I think there’s a headline around Storm Boy winning his first Group 1 in the UK,” said Gannon.
“It would be over 1200m, maybe the Jubilee. I suspect that will be it.
“We’ve got a bit of tall poppy about us so he’ll probably win by three and we’ll find a way (to pot him). But I think he’ll be winning (a Group 1).”
Storm Boy was sold to Coolmore in February before it was announced in November that he would continue his career overseas.
