The Victorian Racing Club (VRC) is making a stand against expensive sporting events.

This Saturday at Flemington, the VRC is offering a number of specials in a bid to attract more people - punters and non-punters - to the races.

Leigh Jordan, the VRC’s executive general manager of racing, is hoping a $10 entry fee as well as $5 food items and $5 drinks will boost attendance numbers at headquarters.

“There’s a lot of commentary about how expensive it is to go to general sporting events and even the races,” Jordan said on SENTrack’s Giddy Up.

“We’ve been working on that pretty hard at the VRC. All during summer we’ve had $10 entry, which is about half price from the picnics to get in, and $20 for the family.

“On top of that we have $5 food favourites - chips, hot dogs, beef pies, sausage rolls, and $10 for a pizza. You wouldn’t get it that cheap at your local pizza store.

“As well as that it’s $5 stubbies (of beer) throughout the course which you won’t get anywhere else. On top of that we’ve got bourbon and cola at $7, scotch and gins and the like are $10, and espresso martinis are $15.

“The main theme of this is we want to make it affordable to come to the races. The racing is pretty good this Saturday, but I’m pretty excited about all these offers. The food offers will continue on as well. It makes it affordable.

“It’s going to be a beautiful day on Saturday at 29 degrees, and I just thought it was worthwhile highlighting.

“A lot of people say how expensive it is to go to the races. This is a good opportunity to come along, enjoy racing and have an affordable day.”

To add to the great value on offer off the track, 2024 Melbourne Cup third place-getter Okita Soushi is set to resume in the 2000m BM100 feature race worth $150,000.

This particular meeting has previously seen the likes of Mornington Glory and Rey Magnerio make themselves known before going on to bigger and better things.

The 10-race card kicks off at 12:15pm AEDT at Flemington on Saturday.
