The Melbourne Mavericks have been dealt a brutal blow on the eve of the 2025 season with superstar shooter El Cardwell ruled out for “the first part of the season”.

The 30-year-old underwent a second round of surgery on her left knee which she aggravated when representing the England Roses during an international series against the Australian Diamonds last year.

“It's a little disappointing in terms of the fact that I’ll now miss the first part of the SSN season,” Cardwell said.

“However, for the longevity of my career and my long-term contribution to the Mavs, I know that this is the best way forward.

“Everyone’s really positive with how the surgery went last week, so I’ll continue to do all I can to contribute to the team in an off-court role in the meantime.”

The Mavs gave no specific timeline on Cardwell’s planned return to the court but said the club would provide updates as her rehabilitation continues.

Cardwell made her Suncorp Super Netball debut in 2023 with the Thunderbirds before joining the Mavs for their inaugural season a year later.

Ahead of their round one clash against Lightning, the Mavs wrap up their pre-season this Thursday with a practice match against the Northern Mystics.
