They hadn’t won a game in 295 days.
But could the Dragons find themselves winning two matches in the space of seven days?
After losing 15 matches in a row, St. George Illawarra under interim coach Dean Young landed their first win for 2026 against the Brisbane Broncos with a 30-26 win on Sunday.
It was a defiant performance by the Red V who made the most of an error-laden showing by the reigning premiers.
One of the standouts for the Dragons was Valentine Holmes. The centre proved to be a match winner having scored two tries while running for 158 metres.
With their drought-breaking win, News Corp’s David Riccio made a specific point to highlight Holmes.
“That was fantastic yesterday,” Riccio stated on SEN’s Front Office with Vossy.
“They were all heart, all spirit, absolutely fighting for each other.
“Valentine Holmes, finally, we see the best of Val. He was terrific.
“That's the standard…that's the reason they signed him.”
Following their win, the Dragons’ attention turns toward their next match against the Sharks.
Cronulla has been in good form, having won its last two matches, which included handing Kieran Foran his second loss as Manly’s interim coach.
But with a depleted spine following Blayke Brailey's fractured arm and halfback Nicho Hynes tweaking his calf in training, Riccio believes the Dragons are a chance of making it two wins from their last two.
“I tell you what, how good's this Sunday afternoon?” he added.
“(At) Shark Park, the local derby. Cronulla with Blayke Brailey, they don't know how to play without Blayke Brailey.
“They've hardly done it in 146 games. They played two weeks ago (without him and), were able to get the job done at Magic Round.
“But you wouldn't say it's a consistent thing. No Blayke Brailey, no Nicho Hynes.
“Dare I say it, there's an opportunity for (the) Saints to go back-to-back."
Should they pull off the upset, it would mean two of their last three victories have come against the Sharks.
Kick-off for the match takes place at 4:05pm AEST.
