With Connor Watson securing his long-term contract with the PNG Chiefs, Denan Kemp has discussed where the NSW representative could land in the short term.
After being allowed to speak with rival clubs before November 1, Watson became the third player to sign with the Chiefs, having agreed to a two-year deal for their inaugural season last week.
Reacting to the signing, Kemp was a big fan.
“I love it, mate. I love it,” he told SEN’s Saturday League Kick-Off.
“I think it's perfect for the roster and the close quarters in which they are living in their resort.
With Watson’s contract with the Chiefs beginning from 2028 and the Roosters allowing the NSW representative an early release, his signature has become hotly contested for next season.
Currently, the Dragons are the red-hot favourites to sign the utility on a 12-month contract.
And with hooker Damien Cook leaving at the end of this season to play for Super League club Castleford Tigers, it could make for a perfect fit within their emerging forward pack.
“Personally, I hope he goes to the Dragons from a Rugby League perspective just cos I think it would really add a lot," Kemp added.
“He'd be perfect for this forward pack, he'd be unbelievable.
“So, I would like him at the Dragons.”
But the former Broncos and Warriors winger also noted that other teams could use Watson's services.
“I'm looking at the Tigers like they could use depth. I don't think you'd sign him as depth,” Kemp continued.
“Dogs, they've already got Kurt Mann, they let go of (Kurtis Morrin, who) went to the Titans.
“Unless Kurt Mann's retiring or moving on, I'm not sure.
“Then you've got Bailey Hayward, who they've kind of admitted, they haven't outright admitted, but with their selections they have admitted (he isn’t their starting hooker).
“I mean, Kurt Mann started No. 9 last week, and Bailey Hayward came off the bench. He can play 13 as well.
“So, I look at it, and I go, does that make sense?”
Watson will next feature for the Roosters when they play the Raiders next Friday night.
