Grading every player as the Lions claw back to win a special Semi-Final

By Jaiden Sciberras

The Brisbane Lions have come from behind to steal victory from the jaws of defeat, claiming an astounding five-point win over the Giants!

The Lions claimed field position early but were not able to capitalise as the Giants quickly flipped the game on its head.

The Orange Tsunami was in full effect at Engie Stadium as the Giants swarmed the ground in typical pulsating fashion to secure five first term goals.

It remained a tight contest before the Giants truly hit the ground running, making the most of the Lions’ inaccuracy to enter the second half with a healthy 21-point lead.

It only got uglier for Brisbane as the Giants tallied seven straight goals, extending the margin to a seemingly insurmountable 44 points just 18 minutes into the second half.

Against all odds, the Lions found five straight majors to claw back into the contest, largely inspired by the young Will Ashcroft, before a Jesse Hogan masterclass to close the third term wrestled back a degree of control.

The tense contest did not slow in the final term, as the Giants extended their lead before Brisbane found six straight to take the lead thanks to a brilliant Joe Daniher display.

An astonishing result sees the Lions through to the Preliminary Finals, securing a 15.15 (105) to 15.10 (100) victory!

We graded every player in the brilliant come-from-behind contest!

GWS Giants

Jesse Hogan: A+

Taught the Lions a lesson. A near-perfect key forward display, genuinely unstoppable. A brilliant season and another great game to solidify his spot at the pinnacle of the competition. Eight marks and five majors.

Tom Green: A

A dominant midfield performance. Found the footy all over the park en route to a whopping 21 contested possessions, finished with a game-high 33 disposals, 10 clearances and a goal.

Harry Himmelberg: B+

Had a few superb moments in the final term, played strong all game to keep Rayner quiet.

Callan Ward: B+

A leader in every sense. 21 touches at 81 per cent.

Finn Callaghan: B+

Seemed to find more space with every Giants transition.

Toby Bedford: B

The Neale-stopper managed to do just that. Significantly reduced the champion's influence on the game while continuing to involve himself in plenty of run and touch.

Sam Taylor: B

Super composed even with difficult company in Joe Daniher.

Josh Kelly: B

Brent Daniels: B

One of the games’ best when he gets going. An incredible four direct goal assists, but a blunder in front of goal that paid the ultimate price.

Connor Idun: B

Had Charlie Cameron covered.

Kieren Briggs: B

Had a very tough battle with McInerney but held up superbly.

Jack Buckley: B-

Quality yet again from Buckley.

Toby Greene: B-

Responded to the mid-week criticism in a strong way. Three majors and six involvements.

Lachie Whitfield: B-

James Peatling: C+

Played out a brilliant first quarter, kicking two great goals from just two disposals while also slowing Dayne Zorko’s ability to catch fire early on. Slowed significantly in the second half as Zorko got back on top.

Aaron Cadman: C+

Got it going early, had the difficult task of Harris Andrews and managed to win out on a few occasions.

Harry Perryman: C+

Lachie Ash: C+

Isaac Cumming: C

Darcy Jones: C

Lachlan Keeffe: C-

Stephen Coniglio: N/A

Extremely unfortunate to have copped a massive head knock in the first term. Withdrawn at QT.

Xavier O’Halloran: N/A

Came on as the sub for the injured Coniglio.

Brisbane

Jarrod Berry: A+

Influential in the second half. Seemed to have a say in every passage. Eight intercepts to spark the Lions from the back half, inspiring play. 27 disposals and five tackles.

Joe Daniher: A+

You really never know what you're gonna get with Joe. Always dangerous, kicked one of the great set shot goals and slotted the go-ahead for his fourth. A genuine wildcard, and when he fires he is as good as anyone.

Will Ashcroft: A

Flipped the game on its head for the Lions. Thrown into the middle of the ground when it seemed all but over in the third and willed the contest back in their favour. Scary to think how good this kid will be. 10 score involvements, nine clearances and 27 touches.

Callum Ah Chee: A-

Played a role on Whitfield and had plenty of involvement in the front half. A game-high 11 score involvements, a great performance.

Dayne Zorko: B+

A difficult night early on for Zorko. Had plenty of attention from James Peatling, was able to find the footy but wasn't able to use it well, but as all champions do, he turned it around with class. Finished with 25 and two massive goals, his passion played as important a role as any in the final half.

Josh Dunkley: B+

Lachie Neale: B

Under the close provision of Toby Bedford all night, couldn’t quite break free to have his usual say on the contest. Despite that, still a strong seven clearances.

Hugh McCluggage: B

Harris Andrews: B

A strange decision to avoid manning Hogan, still played an imposing role but Cadman took him out of several contests which permitted a Hogan v Payne one on one. Regardless, seven intercepts and six marks.

Oscar McInerney: B

Huge as always.

Noah Answerth: B-

Worked as hard as anyone in the back half. Game-high 11 tackles.

Brandon Starcevich: B-

Charlie Cameron: C+

Was able to impose himself late in the game but was noticeably quiet in the teething stages of the game.

Kai Lohmann: C+

Ryan Lester: C

Zac Bailey: C

Incredibly capable but just unable to leave a mark on the game. Some big moments late, just 11 touches.

Jaspa Fletcher: C

Stepped up to kick a massive goal late.

Darcy Wilmot: C

Cam Rayner: C-

A very quiet afternoon for Rayner.

Jack Payne: C-

Brave to get on the park following a knee concern but was simply no contest for Jesse Hogan.

Eric Hipwood: D+

Couldn't get into the game. Beaten comfortably by Jack Buckley, missed a sitter.

Logan Morris: N/A

Only managed two touches in two and a half quarters before being tactically withdrawn.

Conor McKenna: N/A

Brought into the contest in the third term.

A Preliminary Final against the Cats awaits for the Lions, while the Giants drop two massive leads to see their season collapse in straight sets.
