SEN’s Andrew Voss has fired back at AFL pundit and SEN’s Kane Cornes after he labelled the NRL as a “shocking sport”.
The Penrith Panthers took out the 2024 NRL Grand Final with a 14-6 win over the Melbourne Storm, in a game that was tailormade for rugby league purists.
However, many outside viewers, including Cornes were far from impressed with the lack of big moments from the clash.
“It’s just a shocking sport, I’ve said this for a while now,” Cornes said on AFL Trade Radio.
“I really admire the physicality of the players, how tough they are, all of that but tell me was there one highlight, one single highlight in a whole game of NRL, there’s not even a full stadium, it’s so repetitive.
“It would’ve rated its socks off so don’t get me wrong… but not one highlight in the game of games for the whole season.”
Cornes’ co-host, SEN’s Sam Edmund was more surprised with the NRL’s inability to sell out the marquee event, with tickets still available to be purchased all the way up until kick-off.
“How could they not sell it out, I’m still staggered by that,” Edmund added.
“There was still tickets available for $55 before the game.”
After hearing of those comments, Voss didn’t hold back on the pair and gave a fair serve back to the AFL.
“You’re cracking jokes,” Voss said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“I know people eat the wrong sort of mushrooms down there from time to time but you’ve had a bag full, you have deadest either ingested, inhaled or eaten bad mushrooms.
“Because you’re a good broadcaster, Sam’s good and Kane’s good but they’re on something.
“I can’t sit through a game of AFL full stop but that doesn’t mean I say it’s a bad sport.
“I thank God or whoever God is, every day that I was born a rugby league man and I say that hand on heart, I’m so glad I was born a rugby league man rather than AFL.”
Voss also responded to the criticism of the game not being sold out and if the fans were truly captivated by the event.
“It was breakneck speed, the crowd was into the game all night,” Voss added.
“There was very few lulls… everyone was into it, everyone was tense.
“Was it a classic? No, but for tension, the tension levels were off the needle all night.”
