Form analysts Mitch Lewis and Dean Watling are both keen to kick off Derby Day at Flemington this Saturday with a winner in the first race.
The pair have targeted the Carbine Club Stakes and firm favourite Feroce who stays at 1600m after narrowly going down to Private Life at the same distance in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas on October 12.
Gareth Hall asked Lewis if the Dom Sutton-trained gelding is one of the good things of the week at Flemington.
“I’m leaning that way, I think he has to be,” Lewis said on SENTrack’s Giddy Up.
“He obviously brings that Caulfield Guineas form when 0.1 (lengths) away from a win there and 0.6 (lengths) away in the Prelude (behind Angel Capital).
“I think it’s the stronger form line and he should find this easier. He’ll appreciate Flemington.
“I think it lines up perfectly for him and anything near $2 is probably a pretty good bet. I’ve got him a fair bit shorter.”
Watling concurs, identifying Feroce as the runner in the reight-horse field that should get all the favours.
“Aeliana, who J-Mac rides, she’s probably the only danger,” he added.
“There’s not a whole lot of speed here and I think Feroce settles in behind them and will be too good.
“If anything we’ll probably start the meeting favouring anything a little bit up on speed which again plays into the hands of the favourite.
“One of the better bets of the program.”
Feroce is currently rated the $2 favourite with Sportsbet for the Carbine Club which jumps at 12:20pm AEDT on Saturday.
